Raavanan is a modern day adaptation of the great Indian epic Ramayana which tells the story of Rama, whose wife Sita is abducted by the demon (Rākshasa) king of Lanka, Ravana.
Vikram plays Veera, a Naxalite leader (the modern day Ravana), Prithviraj plays a Police officer (the modern day Rama) and Aishwarya Rai plays his wife, a singing tutor (the modern day Sita). Mani Ratnam has approached the story from the perspective of Veera (Raavanan), hence Vikram is the protagonist and Prithviraj the antagonist, the exact opposite of the epic Ramayana where Rama is the protagonist and Ravana the antagonist of the story.
Mani Ratnam has reportedly given a new twist on this loose adaptation of the Ramayana.[1] Mani Ratnam had earlier directed Thalapathi, which bore close resemblance to the Mahabharata.
